FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 23, 2012 – Wildwood Seed & Specialties, Monroe, Oregon, is voluntarily recalling a limited supply of their Sleek and Sassy brand bird and small animal foods that contain raw in-shell peanuts. These products contain peanut ingredients recalled by Sunland Inc. due to their potential to be contaminated withSalmonella.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some, or all, of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Product and product lots that do not appear on the list above are not subject to this recall.

As a result of Sunland Inc. announcing a voluntary extension of the ongoing recall of peanut butter and other nut butter products produced in their Peanut Butter Plant to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts processed in their separate Peanut Processing Plant due to possible health risk on Oct 12, 2012, Wildwood Seed & Specialties is voluntarily recalling a limited supply of their Sleek and Sassy brand bird and small animal foods that contain raw in-shell peanuts from Sunland’s Peanut Processing Plant. This is being done as a precautionary measure, as the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The original recall initiated by Sunland, Inc., on September 24, 2012, included Peanut Butter and other Nut Butter products produced in a separate building from where raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts are processed. The extension to include their Peanut Processing Plant is the result of the continued investigation by Sunland and FDA. Sunland has ceased the production and distribution of all products from both its Peanut Butter Plant and its Peanut Processing Plant while FDA and Sunland continue their investigation. No consumer illnesses from raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts from their Peanut Processing Plant have been reported to date. The most current information is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regarding confirmed illnesses is available at their website:

http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/brediney-09-12/index.html

Consumers who have purchased the above lots of Sleek & Sassy brand are urged to stop feeding them and return product to place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them immediately. For further information about the recall please call 541-847-6126 from 10:00 AM to 4 PM PST Monday through Friday.
